Composition

BMus (Hons) Music:

You will need to submit a portfolio of original work to us.

The portfolio should typically contain copies of at least THREE contrasting pieces. If you are writing for acoustic instruments (or for voices) your pieces should be fully notated, preferably with recordings. Scores should be printed or copied onto both sides of the paper and bound in a way that allows the work to be read naturally. Recordings should be properly named and identified, with durations and a description of how each recording was made, who was involved, and whether the notated scores of the recorded works were created before or after the recording was made. If you are using technological media as a composer, you should submit recordings of your work along with an accompanying critique which includes details of your creative processes and the resources employed. It will be helpful to see graphic scores and other notations with this work.

Typically, there will be two members of staff on the interview panel. The interview will vary in length, but normally last between 25 and 45 minutes during which you should be prepared to discuss the portfolio of work you have submitted (see above).

The interview may also touch upon broader issues such as your creative interests, current activities and professional aspirations. It may also include some aural tests. We may ask you about your knowledge of music theory, including functional harmony, counterpoint, instrumentation, notation, structural, chordal and melodic analysis, and a wide range of examples from the classical and non-classical repertoire. We may ask you about your current listening and reading, and about musical and other cultural performances you have experienced recently. If you have submitted recordings, especially of non-notated or sonic explorations, please make sure you explain in your submission about your starting points, aims and methods. We can then discuss these at interview.
